Hylton Credits ARCA Safety Standards and LaJoie Seat for
Minimizing Injuries
MEMPHIS
TN (October 13, 2009) - Stock car legend James
Harvey Hylton credits ARCA RE/MAX Series safety measures
and car seat builder Randy LaJoie’s race seat for
minimizing his injuries received during a crash in
Sunday’s American 200 at Rockingham Speedway.
Hylton was involved in a serious wreck and subsequent
fire on the track’s back straight after completing 137
laps of the one mile oval. “I am fortunate to have made
it through such a hard impact”, stated Hylton from his
Inman S.C. shop, “the stringent safety requirements
mandated by ARCA for the cars in this series really paid
off for me today. The ARCA series officials and
Rockingham Speedway safety crews also did an outstanding
job responding to the wreck.”
The 2009 Ford Fusion
first made contact with the outside wall before making a
hard impact with the inside retaining wall. The car was
equipped with a custom seat built by former NASCAR
driver Randy LaJoie’s Concord N.C. based company The
Joie of Seating. “I got to say that my injuries would
have been a lot worse had it not been for the protection
afforded by the LaJoie seat”, stated Hylton.
This was Hylton’s
second major crash on the back straight at Rockingham
Speedway. Hylton was involved in a crash on lap 55 of
the NASCAR Grand National series American 500 on
October 29, 1967. “I got hit in the same spot at
Rockingham in 1967 and spent eight days in the
hospital. That incident was the hardest impact that
have I experienced during my career. I would have to
say that Sunday’s crash is definitely the second hardest
impact though”, stated the veteran Hylton.
I would also like to
thank everyone for the support and concern shown for me
this week”, stated Hylton, “it’s situations like this
that really make you thankful for friends, fans, family
and fellow competitors”.
