In
the mid-seventies Chevrolet's Laguna S-3 reigned supreme as the car to beat in
NASCAR's Winston Cup Series. The supremacy was soon abated as NASCAR
imposed that these cars would have to run a carburetor restrictor plate during
the 1978 season. Enterprising General Motors teams soon began rebodying
their S-3 racers as 1977 Oldsmobile 442s. Hylton Motorsports rebodied
their remaining Chevrolet S-3 as a 442 and also later purchased a 442 from
Junior Johnson and Associates.
The
Oldsmobile 442 was first raced by Hylton Motorsports on May 14, 1978, in the
Winston 500 at Talladega. James Hylton piloted the car to a 10th place
finish and collected $6,420 for his efforts. The 442s next race would
yield a 8th place qualifying position for driver Al Holbert but a crash on lap
113 ended the promising effort. The 442s would be campaigned by Hylton
Motorsports in 12 races, with most appearances coming on superspeedways, during
the 1978 - 1980 time period.
In 1981, NASCAR mandated the change from 115" wheelbase
cars to 110" wheelbase cars. This relegated the Olds 442 to an early
retirement from NASCAR competition. The two Hylton Motorsports Oldsmobile
442 racers both exist and are awaiting restoration. |
